The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hugged and kissed eight parents who have lost sons and daughters during an emotionally-charged visit to the Child Bereavement UK charity.
The Duke also told a group of bereaved children that he empathised with them because he had been "in similar circumstances" when his mother Diana, Princess of Wales died in 1997. The 30-year-old Duke, who is patron of the charity, held a 15-minute private meeting with eight parents who told him and the Duchess about their children's deaths during a group counselling session.
During their two-hour visit to the charity's offices in Saunderton, Bucks., the Duchess, in a black short-sleeved Topshop shift dress and a cream coat by Goat, talked to teenagers and younger children going through the grieving process.
The Duke told them: "You realise I've been in similar circumstances."
William Howitt, aged eight, gave the Duke, who became patron of the charity in
2009, some brightly coloured felt material which reminded him of his father
Bruce, who died last year. His mother Lorna, who was also there with her
daughters Georgina, six, and Beatrice, three, said: "They have been so
excited, particularly the girls, meeting a real prince and princess. Really
it helped."
